Workplace Risk Assessments - Target Audience

Health and Safety law and the HSE requires you to take reasonable measures to protect everyone in your workplace from harm. In particular, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 legally require employers to identify the hazards in their workplace and put in place measures to control the health and safety risks they pose.

A key part of protecting your workforce and users is completing a risk assessment. The five step risk assessment process involves identifying the hazards associated with a specific task or working environment, evaluating the risk and their potential to cause harm and deciding on suitable and sufficient control measures. Certain risks may require a dedicated type of risk assessment, such as a fire risk assessment or COVID-19 risk assessment.

This workplace risk assessment course will cover how to do a risk assessment, and is suitable for anyone who is responsible for managing health and safety at work. It is also ideal for anyone who works in a high-risk environment and needs to understand how risks are assessed and how they can protect themselves from harm at work.

Meets the requirements of HSE, CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, Exor, SMAS and other SSIPs.

Workplace Risk Assessments - Course Overview

Overview

Assessing the risks present in your workplace is an essential part of any safety management system and can help to prevent your employees and the people on your premises from experiencing harm. This course provides an introduction to risk assessments, and will help you to understand how to write these assessments for your workplace and use them for risk management. This is important in order to protect your workforce and comply with health and safety law, such as the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Recording your findings from a risk assessment is a legal requirement if you employ five or more people, but is strongly recommended for organisations of any size. A simple risk assessment template to help you do this is used as part of this course.

The learning outcomes for this online course include:

  • Understanding key terms such as 'hazard', 'hazardous event' and 'risk'.
  • Being able to define the terms 'likelihood' and 'consequence'.
  • Understanding the risk matrix and assessment process.
  • Understanding the benefits of carrying out risk assessments.

Module Summary

This module will cover:

  • What a hazard is.
  • What a hazardous event is.
  • How to identify workplace hazards.
  • What risk is, and how to calculate it.
  • What a likelihood rating and consequence rating is.
  • How to use the risk assessment matrix.

In this module, learners will explore:

  • What a formal and dynamic risk assessment is.
  • Why risk assessments are important.
  • How often they should be completed and by who.
  • The 5 steps to a risk assessment.
  • How to write a risk assessment.
  • A simple risk assessment example.

In this module, learners will be guided through the start of a risk assessment for their own workplace. The template and process used in this module can then be used to continue this assessment at a later date.

Duration

It takes approximately 60 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.

Assessment

All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 12 multiple choice questions and need to answer a minimum of 9 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be retaken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.

Further training

If you are looking for further training in managing health and safety in the workplace, consider taking our Level 3 Workplace Health and Safety course, which covers a range of additional information such as hazard identification, incident investigation and performance measurement that will help you to better protect your workforce. We also offer a course on COVID-19 Workplace Preparedness, which will help you carry out a workplace risk assessment for coronavirus.

Workplace Risk Assessments - Accreditation and Certification

IIRSM Certificate

Successful candidates will receive a IIRSM Certificate and 1 CPD Credit.

This course certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training or this type of course. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years. We would recommend refreshing knowledge as and when legislation or guidance changes applicable to these regulations.

All of our courses, systems and services have been registered to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. Quality Management Systems Ltd (QMS) made this prestigious award to Commodious in January 2018. This gives assurance that the training and assessment was completed with a quality registered organisation.
