Module Summary

The IOSH Working Safely course is split into five interactive modules:

The principles of why working safely is important. Candidates will cover the following;

  • Why it is important to work safely

  • Who is responsible for safety and health in the workplace

  • An organisation’s responsibilities for safety and health

  • Who has responsibility for worker actions

Learners will cover:

  • The six hazard groups: - mechanical - physical - chemical - environmental - biological - organisational
  • Hazards that are not easy to identify
  • What is meant by the terms ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’
  • What is meant by the term ‘risk assessment’
  • What is meant by the terms ‘likelihood’ and ‘consequence’
  • Deciding on what actions to take to control risk
  • What is meant by the term ‘reasonably practicable’

This module covers an overview of the following common hazards, including how they can cause harm and what can be done about them:

  • aggression and violence
  • asbestos
  • bullying
  • chemicals and harmful substances
  • computer workstations
  • confined spaces
  • drugs and alcohol
  • electricity
  • fire
  • getting in and out
  • heights
  • housekeeping
  • lighting
  • manual handling
  • noise
  • personal hygiene
  • plant and machinery
  • slips and trips
  • stress
  • temperature
  • vehicles and transport
  • welfare facilities

This module is concerned with;

  • What an organisation can do to manage and improve safety and health in the workplace
  • Worker responsibilities for improving safety and health in the workplace
  • How attitude and behaviour can affect safety and health in the workplace
  • What a safe system of work is
  • What a ‘permit to work’ is
  • How safety signs can play an important part in communicating safety and health information
  • Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • The safety and health of other people who may come on site, including contractors, visitors and members of the public
  • The role of safety committees and worker representatives in safety and health
  • Types of workplace inspections
  • Emergency procedures
  • What is meant by the terms ‘incident’, ‘accident’ and ‘near miss’
  • Reporting incidents, including near misses and accidents
  • First aid provision
  • The role of the safety and health enforcement inspector
  • Health surveillance and monitoring

The modules must be completed in order. The course can be exited at any point. The system saves progress so returning candidates can continue where they left off. If attempted in one sitting then at least 6 hours should be allocated to fully work through all the interactive exercises and to read and absorb the information.  Learners who have completed other health and safety training will probably find they can work through at a much faster pace - typically less than 3 hours.

Further reading links are provided throughout the course. The assessment only covers the main course, the links are for interest only.

Assessment

The assessment cannot be attempted until all the course modules have been worked through. The assessment must be done within 3 months of starting the course, BUT you can always contact us and we will re-enrol you for FREE - you must do the whole course again before attempting the assessment.

The assessment questions are randomly taken from a large question bank provided by IOSH. If the assessment is re-sat, different questions will be asked. The assessment must be completed in one sitting and cannot be re-visited or re-started. IOSH also states that the assessment should be treated as a closed book exam.

There are two parts to the assessment:

  1. A knowledge and comprehension assessment which consists of 16 questions in a variety of formats; and
  2. An application of learning, where learners are required to complete a hazard-spotting exercise, that consists of four exercises.

There is a time limit of 30 minutes for the assessment.

To attain the IOSH Working Safely Certificate an overall passmark of 30 out of 49 is required with a minimum score requirement for the individual modules of 20 out of 33 for the knowledge and comprehension assessment and 10 out of 16 for the application of learning. If you fail the assessment, then contact us and we will re-set the course Free of Charge so that you can try again. We will keep doing this until you pass.
