Employees across a wide range of industries regularly come into contact with dust particles and other airborne contaminants at work. If left uncontrolled, these particles pose a significant health hazard and can lead to the development of occupational lung diseases such as lung cancer, which cause an estimated 12,000 deaths a year in the United Kingdom.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 are designed to protect the health and safety of those that work with harmful substances. Dust is one of the substances covered by COSHH, meaning that employers must prevent dust inhalation and limit the amount of dust that workers are exposed to at work. This can be done in many ways, such as installing an appropriate fume extraction or ventilation system.
This dust awareness training course explores the dangers associated with dust, such as lung damage, and provides information on the dust control measures that an employer should adopt. It is designed for everyone who regularly works around dust, including construction workers, metal workers and those that work in mills and bakeries. It is also appropriate for those responsible for deciding and implementing dust control measures.
While dust may not seem to pose a significant risk to health, it can be very dangerous for a number of reasons. Often, dust is so small that it is invisible to the naked eye and cannot be detected without a dust lamp. This allows it to travel deep into the lungs and cause significant damage. Also, it can be difficult to control without dedicated equipment such as a dust extraction system.
Failing to implement appropriate control measures can result in long-term exposure to dust, which has serious negative health effects and cause damage to lung tissue. This can significantly affect lung function, and highlights the importance of understanding dust and implementing effective dust control measures.
After completing this course, learners will:
If you are looking for further training in COSHH and managing hazardous substances, consider taking our COSHH Awareness training course. This course explores the regulations in more detail, and provides information on a range of substances commonly found in the workplace and how to carry out a COSHH risk assessment.
It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.

This course certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training or this type of course. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years. We would recommend refreshing knowledge as and when legislation or guidance changes applicable to these regulations.
All of our courses, systems and services have been registered to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. Quality Management Systems Ltd (QMS) made this prestigious award to Commodious in January 2018.
