Banksman and Traffic Marshal Awareness Training - Target Audience

Please note: this course is a general awareness course and is not a skills-based banksman or traffic marshal qualification.

Banksmen, often called traffic marshals or signallers, play a vital part in maintaining workplace safety. They are operatives trained to direct vehicle movement on or around site including supervising the safe movement of vehicles and safe crane lifts.

You will find banksmen, traffic marshals, signallers and slingers as they are varyingly called across a number of different workplaces, including construction sites; docks; factories; and warehouses.

This banksman course considers the various roles of a banksman and details the accepted banksman signals and verbal code words as recommended by the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996

This banksman and traffic marshal training course is a general awareness course aimed at anybody who may take instruction from banksmen such as delivery drivers, crane operators, site operatives and contractors so that safe movement of vehicles and lifting operations can be achieved on-site.

The course is designed to satisfy the training and awareness requirements of relevant legislation and regulations including Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Meets the training requirements of HSE, HSG 17, CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, Exor, SMAS and other SSIPs.

Further practical training and environment-specific training in addition to the content of this course must be provided as part of the training required for a banksman or traffic marshal.

This course would be suitable as a refresher for individuals who have already received full practical training.

Banksman and Traffic Marshal Awareness Course

Banksman Training - Course Objectives

Of all workplace traffic accidents being struck by a vehicle is the most common accident, causing 76% of fatalities and 42% of major injuries. The traffic marshalling section of the course covers implementing one way systems, separating pedestrians from traffic and personally managing the movement of vehicles around the site.

Vehicle reversing is potentially the most dangerous site traffic hazard. Unavoidable reversals are covered including how to design arrangements for traffic management using:

  1. ‘Banjo’
  2. ‘‘Hammerhead’
  3. ‘Stub’

It is important that all workers on a site can quickly identify a banksman and other roles to maintain a safe environment. The course covers the hard hat Black/Orange/White/Blue colour scheme introduced by Build UK and the stickers for such as First Aid or Fire Marshall.

The standard hand signal communication methods are covered in great detail with interactive exercises to test knowledge. The accepted verbal code is covered to ensure that safety information is passed on quickly with no misinterpretation.

The role of the banksman in a safe lift is detailed in this course however, the actual planning of a safe lift is outside the scope of this course. The planning of safe lifts is covered by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998 and is covered in our LOLER course

After completing the course, candidates will:

  • Know how to identify a banksman.
  • Understand the role of banksmen in the workplace.
  • Be aware of activities that involve a banksman and those that don’t.
  • Be aware of the risks involved in crane lifts, workplace traffic and vehicle reversals and understand how banksmen can help reduce these risks.
  • Understand safe vehicle movement systems for the site.
  • Know how to use hand and/or verbal signal code to direct traffic.
  • Know how to use hand signals to instruct a crane operator during a lift.
  • Be aware of the standard hand signals and verbal communication used by banksmen as detailed in Schedule 1 of the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996.

Banksman Course - Structure

The course comprises 4 interactive modules and a final assessment.

  • Module 1 introduces the role of the banksman.
  • Module 2 is concerned with Lift Supervision.
  • Module 3 looks at Traffic Management
  • Module 4 covers communication methods.

Links to recommended reading and additional resources are provided within the training modules. These links are not mandatory and will not be tested for in the final assessment.

Duration

It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.

Assessment

All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 12 multiple choice questions, randomly chosen from a larger question pool, and need to answer a minimum of 9 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed.
