The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, which is what the acronym LOLER stands for, are a set of regulations that affect how lifting operations can be carried out and what lifting equipment can be used. They are designed to ensure the health and safety of people when lifting equipment is in use.
Among other things, the LOLER regulations require that all lifting operations are properly planned by a competent person, supervised and carried out safely. It also requires that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked and thoroughly examined.
This course details the aims and scope of LOLER, including when and where they apply, and the requirements they place on employers and employees. It is suitable for anyone involved with the manufacture, supply, hiring and use of lifting equipment.
Meets the requirements of HSE, CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, Exor, SMAS and other SSIPs.
LOLER are a set of regulations that build upon the requirements of PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998), and are designed to reduce the risks associated with lifting operations. However, they are complex, which can make them difficult to understand and comply with.
This course breaks down LOLER to make it easy to understand and follow, and allow you to better protect those around you while carrying out lifting operations. It also aims to answer questions such as:

This course certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training or this type of course. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend most re-training is done every 3 years. We would recommend refreshing knowledge as and when legislation or guidance changes applicable to these regulations.
All of our courses, systems and services have been registered to the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. LOLER Training - Frequently Asked Questions
LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.
LOLER applies to the vast majority of lifting equipment, which is any equipment used in a workplace to lift or lower loads. The regulations also apply to any accessories used during the lifting process, such as accessories used to attach or stabilise loads.
Anyone who carries out a lifting operation must have the training and experience required to do so safely. Our LOLER certificate is ideal for anyone who regularly carries out lifting operations and requires an understanding or refresher of the requirements of LOLER to help them complete these operations safely and legally.
LOLER requires all lifting equipment to be regularly inspected, and states that:
LOLER requires any inspections to be completed by a ‘competent person’, which is described as someone who has the knowledge and experience required to successfully identify and evaluate any defects or issues that an item of lifting equipment may have.
While this training course will provide learners with an understanding of LOLER and lifting equipment generally, additional training and experience will be required in order to act as a ‘competent person’.
