What does IOSH stand for? What is IOSH?

IOSH stands for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), a Chartered body and leading membership organisation for safety and health professionals. IOSH has over 47,000 members worldwide, working in a diverse range of organisations in around 130 different countries

IOSH offer professional development programmes, events, helplines, and up-to-date technical advice. IOSH provide training and skills products and other IOSH approved courses that provide valuable knowledge, skills and qualifications for their members and colleagues.

IOSH was formed in 1945, a Chartered Membership of IOSH is recognised worldwide as the hallmark of professional excellence in workplace safety and health. How long is an IOSH Managing Safely course?

The IOSH managing safely course consists of 7 modules, with a theory exam and then a practical project that has to be submitted for marking. To study the 7 interactive modules and take the theory exam will take most people a good 8 hours (less if you have some health & safety knowledge), the practical project should take no more than 2 hours.

How long is IOSH Managing Safely valid for?

If you are thinking about doing the IOSH Managing Safely course or have already completed it and are wondering if there is an expiration date on the qualification,the simple answer to this question is no, the IOSH Managing Safely certificate does not have an expiry date. However IOSH do recommend that you take a refresher course every three years to keep your knowledge up to date.

How to verify an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate?

The quickest way to verify an IOSH managing safely certificate is to contact the licensed provider that issued the certificate, give them the certificate number and ask when and who the certificate was issued to. Then contact IOSH to make sure the issuer is actually a current licensed provider. Or you can contact IOSH direct with the certificate number and ask them to verify it - but this can take up to 7 days.

What is IOSH training?

IOSH training is a range of general health, safety and compliance courses developed and certificated by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. For example IOSH Working Safely – aimed at employees and IOSH Managing Safely – aimed at managers.

How much does an IOSH course cost?

Costs vary enormously depending on the course, the course provider and whether it is online or a classroom based course. Commodious costs for online courses are recognised to be some of the best value worldwide.

What level qualification is IOSH managing Safely?

Managing Safely is broadly equivalent to a level 2 qualification, that is around a GCSE level at grade A*, A, B, or C. Although there is not an accepted equivalence on this but an IOSH Managing Safely qualification will enhance any CV and it's also widely accepted as a robust managerial qualification. A face to face course may attract 21 CPD points, the more convenient and economic online course generally has 10 points minimum - but check with your CPD organisation as they may well award more.

Which is better NEBOSH or IOSH? Which is better OSHA or IOSH?

IOSH courses are better suited for those with roles as an employee or manager without specific responsibility, whereas NEBOSH courses are a higher level qualification and better suited for those seeking a career within health and safety management. IOSH and OSHA are totally different, IOSH is a membership organization for health and safety professionals and OSHA is an US american standards government agency (similar to the HSE).

BS OSHAS 18001 (that has recently been changed to ISO 45001) was a British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Compliance with it enabled organizations to demonstrate that they had a system in place for occupational health and safety.
